Details and Downloads of Meccano Manuals

Confirmation of those print codes in red is required (Scans of these manuals would also be appreciated)
Also details of any editions not included - especially overseas editions, would be appreciated

Note - The number of pages noted in a manual always includes the covers.

Note - The numbers in green are the reference numbers from the list of USA Meccano manuals produced by Kendrick Bisset. Kendick Bisset's website on Meccano in the United States.
Information on copyright dates etc. is available for many of the American manuals on the USA © Info page.

NEW - Manual Downloads - NEW

Manual scans from my reference collection covering most of the manuals are now available for download in pdf format. Where available, these are shown in blue in the tables below. Note that some of the files are rather large.

HELP - If anyone is able to supply scans of any manual for which there is no download or where there are torn or missing pages then that would be appreciated. Please contact me first for details. I would like to make this website as complete as possible

Note *1 - Three versions of the UK 1914/15 Prize Models book have been identified. See the 'Changes' pages for details of the differences.

Note *2 - Three editions of the Meccano Motor manual have so far been identified. The front cover of the 1912 edition does not mention New York and the French address is "17, Rue Bleue, Paris". The front cover of the first 1913 edition now mentions New York and the French address changes to "5, Rue Ambroise Thomas". The front cover of the second 1913 edition removes mention the German 'Meccano G.m.b.H.' company and its address under the German name of the manual.

Print codes of
1928-34 New/Prize Models,
Standard Mechanisms,
How to Use Meccano Parts
and the Steam Engine manuals
The New Model manuals are all 'Large Format' - 11" x 8 1/8"
All other manuals are 'Small Format' - 9¾" x 6 5/8" up to 1933
From 1934 the manuals changed to 'Large Format' like the 'Lettered' Outfit manuals of the period
The post-war USA edition of the Standard Mechanisms Manual was 9½" x 6 5/8"

Note *1 - The print code - 13/1134/15 is that which is on the front cover. It also has a print code on the rear cover which is slightly different - 13/1034/15.

Note *2 - The 1928 'Overseas' edition (728/5) is actually the standard UK edition with an 'Overseas' stamp on the front cover, half of pages 45/6 cut out and page 48 and inside rear cover stuck together.

Note *3 - The 1929 Australian edition has also been seen with the words 'Australian Edition' in the bottom right hand edge of the front cover blacked out, and a revised price sticker for 1/- on the front cover. Pages 49 and the inside rear cover are stuck together to remove any references to prices. As the price of 1/- was the same as the UK editions, these were probably surplus manuals that were pressed into use for the UK market.

Note *4 - Three editions of this manual have been seen. The only difference is the address at the bottom of the front cover - Binns Road - Elizabeth NJ - Kenilworth NJ.

Note *5 - This 1928 American edition appears to be the same as ref 28.4 except that the cover and the outer pages (1/2 & 47/48) have been replaced. These additional pages were almost certainly printed in America (unlike the rest of the manual) and appear as though they might be identical to those on earlier American editions of this manual as they mention the E3 motor which otherwise has only been seen on late 1926 or early 1927 manuals/price lists.

Note *6 - 1926/7 American editions of the Standard Mechanisms manual are expected to exist as it was advertised in the American manuals from 1926. Confirmation required.

Print Codes of Pre-war Supermodel Leaflets (Liverpool)
These are nominally - 11" x 8½" (280mm x 216mm)
A number of cut down leaflets - approx. 10¾" x 8" (273mm x 203mm) have also been seen. Identified as *2 below
It is thought that these are those leaflets that were issued free with the December 1934 Meccano Magazine.
They would have been cut down so that they could be inserted inside the MM (8¼" x 11") without hanging out.

Note *1 - An overprinted version of SML 32 in English has been reported with a note about using Ring Frames instead of Channel Segments. Confirmation required.

Note *2 - Cut down versions of these leaflets have also been seen - see top of table for details.

Note 3 - NR -> No reference number. The year against these leaflets, is when they were thought to be printed.

Note *4 - All the leaflets were also printed in French and all the ones noted on this website (apart from SML32) were published by Meccano(France). Did Meccano(Liverpool) publish any? Suspect SML32 above (which has no identifying print code or Liverpool/France info) may have been published by Meccano(Liverpool) because the French translation of 'Leaflet' is 'Notice' whereas it is 'Feuille' for all the other leaflets that were published by Meccano(France).

Note *5 - Some of the leaflets were also published in German and Spanish as well. So far these are the only ones I know about. Were any more issued?

Note *6 - All of the leaflets had translations of the text only, in four languages - Spanish, Dutch, Danish and German. I would appreciate scans of those that are missing plus any with a different print code.

Note *1 - This early Motor Chassis leaflet was a reprint from the July 7th 1915 edition of "The Light Car". A date of around 1915/6 is assumed. There is no other date or print reference on the leaflet. Was a French version ever printed?

Note *2 - Only the Motor Chassis leaflet has been seen so far. It is likely that American versions of the other model leaflets do not exist as the No.7 outfit was not sold in America. Confirmation required.

Note 3 - With the exception of *1 - these model leaflets were all associated with 1922-7 Outfit 7 models.

Note 1 - Worthy of note is that model S30 (Steam-driven Stiff Leg Derrick) refered out to SML 6a. However this leaflet was never printed.

Note 2 - The 1929 manual did not contain a price list of the Steam Engine and its components.
Instead a stick in note was added in at least some of the manuals
(print code 1.929.5 seen - were there any others?)

Note *1 - In the 1928 edition (728/5) with the 'Overseas' stamp on the front cover, the prices of parts are cut off from pages 46/7 to form a half page. Also pages 48 and the inside rear cover are stuck together. Almost certainly any other 'Overseas' editions of the 1926-8 manuals will also be the same.

Note *2 - The copy of the edition of this manual which was examined was missing its rear cover.

Cross References of Early Supermodel Leaflets to Outfit Manual Models
A number of Outfit 7 manual models did not include building instructions and instead referred out to the appropriate supermodel leaflet. Details are as below

Note 1 - There was also a High Speed Ship Coaler (model 734) in the 1922-4 manuals. This had no instructions but referred out to separate instructions. The model featured was however the same as in the 1918-21 Book 2 manuals which had instructions. It was however different from the leaflet first published in 1925 and in the 1925-7 manuals. Was a leaflet ever actually issued for this model?

Note 2 - The Clock leaflet has a 1924 print code. However it does not appear to have been included in a manual until 1927.

Note *1 - In 1928 Model 7.11 was 'Aeroscope' and 7.13 was 'Tractor' in manuals, although they referred out to the appropriate SML leaflet. Obviously a result of a late change in SML models. The error was corrected in 1929
Note *2 - In the 1929 manual this model did not have a number and was referred to as a 'Special Model'
Note *3 - This model was in the Steam Engine manual
