Lionel was an unusual construction system. It used square tubes joined by various brackets using rivets and rubber grommets. It was produced in the USA in around 1947 to 1949

Square Tubes, Plates, etc joined by 1/8x1/2" Rivets (6.3mm round head) & rubber Grommets. LIONEL moulded into Tyres. *1 .4" in Flanged Plate.
